The Carboniferous Period, 360-290 million years ago, wass a period of great radiation of amphibians. The first primitive reptiles called amniotes (producing eggs containing the embryonic amnion) evolved. Although still primitive, reptiles and amphibians were carving out a nitch for themselves as the first land vertebrates. In this period, the first gymnosperms (hard trees) diverged from the rest of the plants. |
