Stylemeys nebrascensis, Brule Formation, Middle to Upper Oligocene Epoch

Stylemeys nebrascensis was a dry land tortoise found in the Oredont beds (Middle Oligocene) of the White River badlands, South Dakota and northwestern Nebraska. They are also quite common in the late Eocene and early Oligocene White River badlands of eastern Wyoming. Stylemeys was first described in 1851 by Dr. Joseph Leidy. It is the earliest discovered fossil turtle in America. Skulls rarely found and only 2 had been recorded as of the writing of the reference we cite: The White River Badlands, By Cleophas O'Harra, South Dakota School of Mines, Bulletin No. 13 Department of Geology, November 1920
